Inland Marine Insurance is a broader category of property insurance that covers movable property, property in transit over land, and “instrumentalities of transportation and communication” (like bridges or cell towers). It evolved from ocean marine insurance to cover goods once they moved from ships to land-based transport. The key characteristic of Inland Marine insurance is that it provides coverage for property that is mobile or not at a fixed location, filling the gaps left by standard property insurance policies. While “Tools and Equipment Insurance” is a very common application of Inland Marine for contractors, Inland Marine can also cover a wide array of other movable property such as fine art, computer equipment, communication equipment, musical instruments, trade show exhibits, valuable papers, and even goods held by a bailee (property temporarily in someone else’s care). It’s essentially a “floater” policy, meaning the coverage “floats” with the insured property wherever it goes, providing protection regardless of its location.
